Editing References in Refworks

RefWorks imports references based on the Import Filters that have been created using data samples from various service providers and databases. Because of that some data is imported into incorrect reference type or fields or is not imported at all. You need to check and make sure that records were imported correctly and the right information is in the right fields and fits your selected Output Style. We recommend viewing/editing references right after importing. It will save your time when formatting your final Bibliography.

Editing a Reference

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Click the Edit (Where is it?) link at the right of the reference
  2. When the Edit Reference window appears, select a potential bibliography Output Style
  3. Fields with a green checkmark are recommended fields for that particular style - your reference entry may not have information for all fields -- you may have to fill in missing information manually or move information from one field to another
  4. When finished click on Save Reference

NOTE: Click on any green checkmark to view style specific notes

Global Editing of Multiple References

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Once a group of references have been imported into RefWorks, you might noticed when you view Edit that all of them are missing Date Retrieved Data, Database name, or other information. Before you save them to a Folder, click on Global Edit
  2. Select All in List (Where is it?)
  3. Select Electronic Source Related Fields
  4. Type in needed information, and choose Overwrite Exiting Data, to be consistent

  5. Click on OK
  6. Save references to selected Folder
  7. View all records, using the drop down menu below tool bar, All References Switch to: and select Full View

NOTE: You may need to do some editing on your final Bibliography: check if there are spaces between the citations and adjacent words; for styles that require an alphabetical bibliography, that the sort order is correct.
