Much More than a Web of Science

The Web of Science includes far more than its title might initially suggest, as it makes available both the Science Citation Index Expanded and the Social Sciences Citation Index. The Web of Science is now accessible campus-wide to Georgetown faculty, students, and staff. Web of Science allows researchers to begin with a known, relevant article or paper and find more recent articles that cited the original article entered. Articles may also be searched by author, title, or keyword. With Web of Science, these two multidisciplinary databases can be searched independently or simultaneously. Web of Science is updated weekly, with coverage available back to 1995. Additional backfiles will be purchased over the next several years.

Web of Science Journal Coverage

Citation Index
Journal Covered
Weekly Updates
Science Citation Index Expanded over 5,600 (2,000 more titles than the print or CD-ROM versions) of the world's leading science and technical journals

17,000 new records;334,000 new cited references

Social Sciences Citation Index over 1,700 social sciences journals; also selectively covers relevant items from over 5,600 leading science and technical journals

4,500 new records;88,000 new cited references

Web of Science Features and Benefits

Using the Web of Science researchers can:

  • navigate forward and backward in time through the research literature;
  • discover key papers by ranking search results according to "times cited";
  • locate all cited authors, not just first authors, for articles indexed in the citation databases;
  • track "times cited" information for articles on a weekly basis through automatic updates; and
  • through the Related Records function, find an unlimited number of relevant items sharing one or more cited references.
To access the Web of Science, go to the Library Indexes and Databases page at: http://www.library.georgetown.edu/indexes/index.htm and select either the "Science and Technology" or the "Social Sciences" category. (Databases are arranged in alphabetical order within the categories). Or go to the "A-to-Z List of Databases."
