Library Open 24 Hours, 5 Days a Week At some point in your career, you have probably stayed up late (perhaps even "pulled an all-nighter") studying, doing research, or finishing up a paper that must be presented the next day. Until now, Georgetown lacked a convenient, safe location available at all hours to do this kind of work. In response to requests from both graduate and undergraduate students, the Pierce Reading Room and the second floor of Lauinger Library will be open around the clock from 8 a.m. Sunday through Saturday at 3 a.m., beginning on Tuesday, September 5, 2000. The Graduate Student Organization (GSO) and the Georgetown University Student Association (GUSA), working closely with the Provost's Office, the Library, Public Safety, Facilities, and University Information Services, explored a number of alternative campus locations that would provide 24-hour access to safe, quiet, conveniently located study space and computers. The Lauinger Library proved to be the best choice, as it was already open until 3 a.m.(24 hours a day during exams); had an already established safety monitoring system; offered study spaces for both individual and group study; and provided 35 computers in the Picchi Center for research, word processing, e-mail, scanning, and a variety of other functions. Beginning Tuesday, September 5, the Pierce Reading Room and the second floor of Lauinger Library will remain open all but 10 hours a week. (These areas will close from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.) Only those with a Georgetown University ID will be admitted between midnight and 8 a.m. If you have any questions, please contact the Reference Desk in Lauinger Library at (202) 687-7452 or via e-mail at <http://www.library.georgetown.edu/forms/ask-ref/>.
