Finding Books On The Web: Book and Publishing Web Sites

Do you need to know if the book you want for yourself or for classroom use is in print and what it costs? Do you know where to find information about recent imprints that have gone out-of-print? Is there a work, perhaps even a rare or antiquarian book, that you have been looking for and not been able to find? Would you like to find a publisher's web site or e-mail address? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then the World Wide Web is the place to look. Locating and ordering the books you want can be easy and convenient on the Web.

FINDING IN-PRINT BOOKS:

Price and availability for publications from several countries are currently available free. Each site supports a number of search options, including author, title, and ISBN.

FRANCE: Livres Disponibles from Alapage http://www.alapage.tm.fr/

GERMANY: VLB Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels e.V. http://192.129.40.65/home.htm

SPAIN: Puntos de Información Cultural (PIC). There are several bibliographic resources connected to this site. The books in print resource, ISBN, is located at http://www.mcu.es/pic/spain/ISBN.html

UNITED KINGDOM: British Books in Print, the searchable version of Whitakers, from The Internet Book Shop http://www.bookshop.co.uk/SEARCH.HTM

UNITED STATES: Currently Books in Print is not available free on the Web. You may search Books in Print online by choosing it from the "Connect to another database" option in GEORGE, the online catalog. On the Web you can search Amazon.com, a bookstore on the Web with over one million titles which are in print and can be ordered from your computer. http://www.amazon.com.

FINDING USED, OUT-OF-PRINT, RARE AND ANTIQUARIAN BOOKS:

UNITED STATES: Books Out-of-Print, Internet Edition (U.S.) from Reed Reference Publishing, the publishers of Books-in-Print. You must register for a free password to use this site. http://www.reedref.com/boop.html

U.S. & INTERNATIONAL : The two sites listed here are collectives. The first one is based in the U.S., the second one in Australia. Both have dealer memberships from throughout the English-speaking world. One search will look for your request in the catalogs of hundreds of out-of-print dealers.

Advanced Book Exchange Inc., currently 349 dealers are participating members. http://www.abebooks.com/

Bibliocity, currently has 33 participating members http://www.bibliocity.com/

ANTIQUARIAN BOOK ASSOCIATIONS:

UNITED STATES: ABAA-booknet Catalog Search, found on the homepage of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America, searches nearly two hundred members' catalogs. http://www.clark.net/pub/rmharris/forms/wwwwais.html

INTERNATIONAL: There are comparable antiquarian booksellers associations throughout the rest of the world. Many of these are members of the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB). A list of ILAB members with links to their web sites can be found at: http://206.217.21.64/ilab/english.html

BOOK AND PUBLISHING-RELATED META-SITES:

Two meta-sites (collections of many Web sites) worthy of a bookmark are AcqWeb and Yahoo! The latter is a hierarchical directory of Web sites arranged by subject. The book and publishing sections can be found at: http://www.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Companies/Books/ and http://www.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Companies/Publishing/

AcqWeb, designed for and by acquisitions librarians, includes a Directory of Publishers and Vendors section with an e-mail address directory and separate web and gopher site directories arranged alphabetically, geographically, and topically. http://www.library. vanderbilt.edu/law/acqs/pubr.html

These meta-sites can also be accessed through Lauinger's homepage. Yahoo! is located in the Internet Searching Tools section, and the AcqWeb directories are linked on the Acquisitions Department's homepage, located under the Library Departments section.

If you need help navigating to these sites, please call on us at the Reference Desk, 687-7452, or the Acquisitions Department, 687-7616.
