Encyclopedias in Reference
Where did Russian immigrants settle in the United States? What was the Watermelon or Panama Riot? The answers are found in three new encyclopedias on ethnic groups recently added to the Reference Collection at Lauinger Library. For each ethnic group included in the Gale Encyclopedia of Multicultural America, several pages are devoted to its history, significant immigration waves to the United States, settlement patterns, acculturation and assimilation, and family and community dynamics. It also lists ethnic organizations and news media. The Encyclopedia of African-American Culture and History, a five-volume set on all aspects of African-American life, includes biographies, and essays on topics ranging from advertising to the Vietnam War. An appendix lists African-American Medal of Honor recipients, African-American population by state 1790-1990, and Negro League baseball teams, among other charts, and statistics. The scope of the Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture encompasses Latin America, Brazil, the Caribbean, and other areas of the Western Hemisphere that were once part of the Spanish and Portuguese Empires. Articles cover people, events, countries, and such topics as women, boundary disputes, slave revolts, and whaling. For more information about how the Library can assist with research
questions, call the Reference Desk at 687-7452.
