Off-Campus Storage Frees Space for New Books

The Lauinger Library and Blommer Science Library have now moved nearly 60,000 low-use volumes from their collections to the off-campus storage facility.By September 2000, a total of 150,000 volumes will be moved to storage.Librarians have contacted faculty in each department to enlist their assistance in identifying materials that can be stored remotely. In addition, faculty can review the lists of books being considered for off-campus storage on the Library’s storage website at: <http://www.library.georgetown.edu/storage/index.htm>. Considered for storage are books in the Lauinger Library collection published between 1859 and 1969 (with a few exceptions) that have not circulated since 1993. Many of the items on the lists are duplicate copies or variant editions of titles remaining on campus. On the storage website, a table organized by call number indicates the day each list will be available for review and the schedule for providing comments about which items should remain in the library. Many faculty have already taken advantage of the “Keep These Books in Lauinger” feedback form available with each list. Faculty may also contact their Library Liaison regarding titles they believe should remain in Lauinger.

Jamil Hickerson, Stacks student, and Melissa Upton, Stacks Supervisor, admire shelf space for new books, the result of moving less-used volumes to storage.

Remember that we can retrieve materials from storage upon request. Each book housed in the storage facility includes the location “Off-campus storage” in GEORGE, the online catalog. When you find a book with the location “Off-campus storage,” simply choose “Request item,” and type your name and Library barcode number. Books requested by noon Monday through Friday should be available at the Lauinger Library Circulation Desk by 4:00 p.m. the next business day. Books requested on Saturday and Sunday should be available by 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Books will be held for pickup for ten days. Over time, the Library will take advantage of management statistics to identify volumes used twice a year or more and reinstate them into the Lauinger stacks.

Please contact the reference desks at the Lauinger Library 687-7452 or Blommer Science Library 687-5651 if you need help submitting your suggestions, or have any questions about the storage process.
