Jon Reynolds, University Archivist

Many in the Georgetown University community have joined us in grieving the untimely death on January 2 of Jon Kendall Reynolds (C’65), University Archivist at Georgetown since 1971. The Georgetown University Board of Directors acknowledged Jon’s many contributions in a resolution passed at its February 2000 meeting (see below).
Jon Reynolds portrait

Incomparable in his ability to ferret out both the grand and the minute aspects of Georgetown’s history, Jon preserved and organized the institutional memory of the University. Jon’s knowledge of Georgetown University was nothing less than encyclopedic, and he was known and admired for the promptness and usefulness of his replies to queries.

As a historian, Jon believed strongly in the relevance of visual documents. He explored and organized the Archives’ large collection of photographs, a collection that has become a constantly useful resource to members of the Georgetown community. The first presentation of this interest was Georgetown University: A Pictorial Review, a selection of 156 historical photographs and other visual artifacts displaying the history of the University. Beginning with a single computer in 1983, Jon was instrumental in pushing Georgetown’s Archives in the direction of modern technology. Over a period of years, he developed the Georgetown Archives and Manuscripts Management System (GAMMS) software, which is used in processing archival records and manuscript collections. Jon’s twin interests in computer technology and visual historical materials are combined in Special Collections’ very considerable presence on the World Wide Web <http://www.library.georgetown.edu/dept/speccoll/>, a presence that Jon designed and managed.

A memorial fund to honor Jon has been established in Lauinger Library. Contact Marianne Green at 687-7446 for more information.

Memorial Resolution Expressing Sadness Upon the Death of Jon K. Reynolds and Gratitude for His Service to Georgetown University and its Board of Directors

Whereas, Jon K. Reynolds, a 1965 graduate of Georgetown College, led a distinguished career of generous service to Georgetown University until his untimely death on January 2, 2000, at age 57; and

Whereas, Mr. Reynolds, from the time of his matriculation as an undergraduate until his death, left the Hilltop only briefly, undertaking graduate study in history at the University of Notre Dame; and

Whereas, for nearly three decades, Mr. Reynolds tended the University's historical records, proving a consummate archivist in whose formidable mind and flawless memory Georgetown's two centuries of remarkable and intricate history were fully alive; and

Whereas, in his capacity as University Archivist, Mr. Reynolds was a chief and conscientious custodian of the records of Georgetown University's presidents and its Board of Directors, as well as of its long and essential association with the Society of Jesus; and

Whereas, Mr. Reynolds was not only a dedicated alumnus, but also a generous colleague and cherished friend to so many in the Georgetown University family;

Now, Therefore Be It Resolved, That the Board of Directors of Georgetown University expresses its gratitude for the service of Jon K. Reynolds and its sadness upon the loss of this loyal son of Georgetown, and extends its deepest sympathy to his wife, Kathleen; their children, Anne Beatrice and John Andrew; and the entire Reynolds family.
