Library Studied
by Review Teams
As part of a process set into place by former Executive Vice President William Cooper, the Georgetown University Library spent the last several months preparing for an external review and a subsequent review by a Georgetown faculty committee appointed by the Executive Faculty. This preparation began when the Provost's Office asked the Library to perform a self-study to ascertain the Library's strengths and weaknesses and to determine its future course in supporting the University's teaching and research functions. That self-study, completed in October 1998, also assessed the current status of the Library's organization and services. The external team was composed of Dr. Paul Mosher (team Chair), Assistant
Provost and University Librarian, University of Pennsylvania; Dr. Mary
Cronin, former Library Director at Boston College and currently on the
faculty of its business school; and Mr. Paul Gherman, University Librarian,
Vanderbilt University. The team visited Georgetown January 10-12, meeting
with the Provost and other University administrators, the internal faculty
committee, the Main Campus Library Committee, and Library department heads
and administrators.
Under the leadership of Dr. James Reardon-Anderson, the internal faculty
committee is composed of Professors Mary Culnan, Alison Hilton, Amy Liu,
Alexander Sens, and Leroy Walters. This group met with the external review
team twice during its visit and will continue working after the external
team's report has been received.
Areas of primary concern identified in the self-study were collections,
resources, space, the role of the Library within the University structure,
and technology. During the visit, each team member addressed specific areas
of expertise. Paul Mosher evaluated collections; Mary Cronin focused on
organization, administration, and technology; and Paul Gherman addressed
issues involving technology and services.
As I write, we await the team's report and the next stage in examining
this resource that is so important to Georgetown students and faculty.
My staff and I look forward to working with the internal faculty committee
and the Provost's Office on improving the ways the Library serves the Georgetown
community. We welcome your voices in this dynamic and challenging review.
Please contact me (687-7425 or martin@gunet.georgetown.edu) or Professor
Reardon-Anderson (687-5930 or reardonj@gunet.georgetown.edu) if you would
like to comment on the Library and its services.
