New Video Services
Offered
The Audio-Visual Learning Resource Center (A-VLRC) in Lauinger Library has implemented two new services: a self-service digital video editing station and the loaning of video cameras. The digital video editing station consists of a videotape recorder connected to a Pentium II computer that uses Adobe Premiere software for video editing. This configuration enables users to edit up to 30 minutes of raw video footage frame by frame, create transitions between scenes, and then add titles, music, and voice-overs. Students in Professor Mezur's fall semester Body in Media Performance class used the editing station extensively to prepare their final presentations. Marketing students produced original commercials for snowboards, beverages, and candy using the editing station. Students in women's studies selected clips from a number of recent films to demonstrate the portrayal of women in film.
Two VHS video cameras are available for loan from the A-VLRC to support academic projects. Students in the English Department's Hitchcock class borrowed a camera to film an original script and then edited their project using the digital video editing station. Graduate students in Spanish Teaching Methodology borrowed cameras to record themselves in practice teaching sessions. A professor with the School for Summer and Continuing Education videotaped participants so that they could self-evaluate their progress in Effective Presentations. To use these new services: . Digital editing--This station is self-service, but an appointment for instruction with Pat Woods, A-VLRC Resource Services Supervisor, is advisable (687-7491). . Video camera--Requests should be made at least two working days in advance, and more advance request time may be needed toward the semester's end, when class projects are due. A short training session on camera use can be requested two working days or more in advance of borrowing. Bonnie Tyler, A-VLRC Video Services Supervisor, handles requests for video camera loans (687-6006). Mark Cohen, A-VLRC Director, is available to consult on incorporating all types of educational technology and media into course curricula (687-7491). |
